ADIA Lab concludes Explainable AI summer school with University of Granada

ADIA Lab, the independent Abu Dhabi-based institute dedicated to basic and applied research in data and computational sciences, has successfully concluded its latest International Summer School collaborating with the University of Granada to host more than 50 students from around the world—including 20 from the UAE— for a 9-day course focused on explainable and responsible AI.

The program combined keynote lectures, networking sessions, and hands-on workshops delivered by leading researchers and industry practitioners. Participants explored a wide range of topics within Explainable AI (XAI), including large language models (LLMs), agent-based modelling, time series forecasting, and XAI techniques for tabular and image date. These sessions were complemented by discussions on cross-cutting themes such as complexity, sustainability, causality, regulatory compliance, and real-world applications in areas like autonomous driving.

Commenting on the conclusion of the summer school, Dr. Horst Simon, Director of ADIA Lab, said: “Our international summer school initiative exemplifies the diverse academic programs we pursue with our partner universities and institutions. By offering students the opportunity to gain expert guidance in the increasingly crucial field of XAI—along with its ethical, technical, and social dimensions—we aim to equip them with the skills needed to develop responsible technologies that benefit society.”

The conclusion of the summer school also marked a milestone for ADIA Lab, as it finalized an agreement for its new office, located in the University of Granada building on Gran Via. This new office will serve as a hub for collaboration and continued engagement with academic and research communities in Spain and across Europe.
