Dr Gerard Biau
Dr Biau is an internationally recognized expert in statistics and machine learning, with particular focus on analyzing the mathematical foundations that underpin modern artificial intelligence. His research interests lie in statistical learning theory, the analysis of algorithms, and the development of new methodologies for AI, with recent contributions exploring the convergence between physical modeling and machine learning to harness their combined potential.
Director of the Sorbonne Center for Artificial Intelligence and Professor of Statistics at Sorbonne University
A graduate of École des Mines de Paris and holder of the agrégation in mathematics, Dr Biau earned his PhD from the University of Montpellier in 2000. After serving as a lecturer at Sorbonne University from 2001 to 2004 and completing his Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR), he was appointed professor at the University of Montpellier. In 2007, he joined LPSM at Paris-Sorbonne University, where he is now Full Professor and Director. Following the creation of Sorbonne University in 2018, he led a task force that gave rise to SCAI in 2019, and he is now a founding member and current Director of SCAI.
